PMD

Static analysis of Java source, normalised into the shared JcReport findings format.

The homepage of PMD can be found at pmd.github.io. PMD inspects Java source for common programming flaws, from unused variables to overly complex methods.

Within fawkeZ, PMD is one of the tools that feed the JcReport findings report. Its XML output is normalised before it is merged with the output of the other tools.

Updating PMD within fawkeZ

  1. Update the PMD version in config/ivy.xml.
  2. Add the new finders in config/jcoderz-pmd.xml.
  3. If the report schema of PMD changed, adopt src/xml/schema/pmd.xsd and possibly the normaliser code.
  4. If the rule set schema changed, adopt src/xml/schema/pmd-ruleset.xsd and possibly the normaliser code.

The rule set definition itself is read from the PMD distribution, so that part is updated automatically when the version changes.

The summary report records the effect of the upgrade on the finding count over time.
